This blog is about making, baking, caking, a bit of gardening and some completely ramdom thoughts.

Baby Bunny

Ths is a cake topper, possibly for a future baby shower cake. It's made of 50/50 gumpaste/fondant. I'm hoping to come up with a few of these in different designs but this one, as you can see is a baby bunny. "Check out that tail".

John Deere....Down on the Farm

This was a 1st birthday cake for a little boy. Mom decided to go witha John Deere theme so in addition to the cake was a dozen "haystack" cupcakes and a smash cake designed to look like an ear or corn. How cute is that?

What Did You Miss Today?

You don't realize how beautiful they are until you see them up close.

Isn't he handsome? Could this one be my prince? I don't know but as handsome as he may be, I'm NOT kissing him!

What Did You Miss Today?

Ithink the little fuzzy guy should have checked out what was on the menu on the other side of the house. Somehow I think the apples might have been a bit sweeter.

Sea Turtle

I don't very often get to do many 3-D cakes so this one was a lot of fun. It was a suprise from the sister of the bride to be, whom of course, loves turtles and is an RN about to tie the knot. The client E-mailed me and said she had a dream..."Where have we heard that before?" She dreamed of a turtle wearing a nurses hat with a stetoscope in its ears (Do turtles even have ears)? and a bridal veil on its head. When she saw it, I thought she was going to cry...."Making dreams come true, one cake at a time". LOL!

Gone Fishing!

This cake was so much fun. I've been wanting to make a fish cake like this for a long time so when I was asked to make a cake for a guy who loves to fish.....let's just say I " JUMPED at the chance"! The big guy was actually made of.....no, wait.... He would usually be made of rice krispy cereal and marshmallows, but having forgotten to pick up a few necessities from the store before hand (checking the pantry, scratching my head). Looks like its toasted coconut marshmallows and Fruity Pebbles cereal. Hey...whatever works, right?

Be Still My Bleeding Heart.

Come closer....see it? I Came across this little guy late one evening in my garden, hanging out on my Bleeding Heart vine. His beauty took my breath away. I'm amazed at the small things that can bring us so much joy...the beauty that so many of us miss as we rush through life, to hurried to slow down for just a moment to look around us...to notice. What did you miss today?

Dreaming of more than cake....

Well, I did promise a bit of gardening so I'll throw into the mix a few photos of my garden. This is an arrangement of plants and flowers that I put together myself and photographed. Gardening was my passion before I became so caught up in cake. I don't spend nearly as much time in the garden as I once did.... as I'd like to and I'm afraid it suffers for it. There are days I can hear it calling to me but cake tugs me in the opposite direction, and once again that love/hate relationship with cake resurfaces. To be honest, there are times that I long for the days when it was just myself and the flowers again.

Alice in Wonderland

When my best friend asked me to make her daughter a birthday cake...whom just so happens to love Johnny Depp, I jumped at the chance to make "Alice in Wonderland". This was an exhausting cake, and might I add, almost wasn't. I was already running on very little sleep, when I actually dropped the top teir on top of the bottom one as I was stacking the two. Fortunately, only the side of the bottom cake was messed up a bit and I was able to hide it with a little extra buttercream. Even though this cake took a good deal of time, I do wish I had had just a little more. I would like to have added the rabbit, the stop watch and maybe a couple other details but since it was my gift to her, the birthday girl didn't mind, she loved her cake and by the way, am I the only one that thinks the little fat guys are kind of creepy?

Say Cheese!

Shabby Chic

It's been a very busy week. This is actually Shabby Chic baby shower cake number 2. I think I like this one a little better than the first. I really like the crystals on the top. If your familiar with the Shabby chic look, you know it's all about lace, flowers(roses), green and pink and crystal chandelier's. The inside of the cake is white, pink and light green layers of cake to go with the theme.

Safari Baby

So many cake's, so little time. Do you ever feel like your just chasing your tail? A baby shower cake in a safari theme....Hummmmm..... I wanted to do something a little bit different from the typical black, brown's and green, so this is what I came up with.

More baby shower cookies. Notice the cookies with a monogram for the baby's name.

Baby shower cookies

These babyshower cookies definately take some time but are soooo sweet.

"Now Thats a Big Bow Baby"!

In case you cant tell , I love to make big fondant bows for my cakes, but this one kinda "took the cake"! Don't get me wrong, I love it but it was a bit of a challenge to get that monster to stay on the front of this cake. It took a bit of coaxing , a lot of melted white chocolate and a little prayer that it didn't fall off in transit....tada! (fingers still crossed). I love making baby shower cakes.

Total Confusion

A few years ago (....maybe a few more than that.) My sister asked me if I would be interested in taking some cake decorating classes and OF COURSE....I said no. At that time in my life my girls were small and even though I occasionally enjoyed making their birthday cakes, I also knew they took a lot of time and like most mom's, I had a busy life. Fast forward twelve years....the sweet, buttery smell that perfumes my house on most days is...you guessed it, cake. It started out being about income but soon I realized, for me that wasn't the payoff at all. My " payoff " was the look on a persons face the first time they see their cake. I have to admit that on most days it's a love/hate relationship and there are times (5 o'clock in the morning and I haven't been to bed yet...for the second day.) that I have to ask myself why I do it. After getting much needed sleep, I soon remember what my payoff is. Oh, speaking of which, did you notice the time of this post? Yep, baked, cooled, wrapped up and ready for cake love......tomorrow.
